The Mindset Myth Holding You Back: Why “Challenges” Aren’t a Health Strategy (But Your Identity Is).
If you take your health seriously or say you do then this is going to challenge you. Maybe even convict you. But it might also be the exact shift that finally sets you free.
Before we go there, let me ask you a real question:
What’s your score on your “longevity mindset”? From 0 to 10.
Zero = you think health optimization is just a trend.
Ten = you are fully committed to living longer, stronger, and sharper.
Now the follow-up question; the one that actually matters:
Do your lifestyle, routines, patterns, and spending match the score you gave yourself?
Because every day in my role as a physician and performance strategist, I sit with people who say they’re “a 9” or “a 10”…
Yet their daily choices look like a 3.
The Hard 75 Example: Discipline or Distraction?
Every week I hear it:
“Have you heard of the Hard 75?”
“Have you done the Hard 75?”
“You should try it; it changed my life.”
And listen, I’m not against it. I actually think it is incredibly valuable for what it actually is.
The Hard 75 is not a health strategy. It’s a mental challenge.
A test of discipline. A test of grit. A test of will.
What the Hard 75 includes:
-
Two 45-minute workouts daily
-
No alcohol
-
No cheat meals
-
Daily progress photos
-
A gallon of water
-
Ten pages of reading
It’s designed to break you down mentally and rebuild mental toughness.
But here’s the truth you don’t want to admit…
Hard 75 ends. Health doesn’t.
And here’s where I see the biggest flaw:
The Alcohol Example
People go 75 days without alcohol; something that statistically:
-
Improves sleep in 85% of adults
-
Lowers anxiety in 72%
-
Improves metabolic markers in 68%
-
Reduces body fat in most participants
Yet many are counting down the days until Day 76…
Not to celebrate the mental victory but to finally have the drink again.
So what did the 75 days prove?
You proved you can do it… but not that you want to do it.
Not that you built a lifestyle; just that you survived a challenge.
Same thing with the workouts.
For 75 days:
You exercise twice a day.
You hydrate.
You read.
You follow structure.
And on Day 76?
“I’m good. I did it.”
The habits fade. The identity evaporates.
The Marathon Mindset Problem
It’s the same with marathons.
People say: “I trained. I ran it. I checked the box.”
And all the training strategies, sleep routines, nutrition changes...
Gone the moment the medal hits the neck.
Imagine this mindset anywhere else in life:
“I want to make a million dollars…
…and once I do, I’m going back to the spending habits that kept me broke.”
That would sound insane.
But people do this with their health every day.
Let’s Talk About Insanity & The Definition You Aren’t Using
When I speak to top performers (CEOs, entrepreneurs, pro athletes, firefighters, physicians), I always ask:
What is insanity?
Most say the same thing:
“Doing the same thing and expecting different results.”
And they’re right.
But a mentor once told me something even deeper:
“Insanity is also knowing what to do… and not doing it.”
Read that again.
Let it hit.
Does it challenge you?
Does it convict you?
Or does it make you smile because you’re actually doing the work?
Because look...
Most people DO know what to do.
Eat better.
Move more.
Sleep.
Lift.
Manage stress.
Get labs done.
Optimize hormones.
Lose fat, preserve muscle.
Cut back alcohol.
Get a coach.
Have accountability.
But knowing is useless without doing.
And doing is nearly impossible without support, structure, and accountability.
Health Isn’t a Challenge; It’s an Identity
Too many people approach health like a season.
Or a sprint.
Or a project.
Or a temporary punishment.
Health is none of those.
Health is an identity you live from; not a challenge you complete.
You don’t need another challenge.
You need a guide.
You need accountability.
You need someone to call you out, celebrate you, redirect you, and walk with you through the highs and lows.
Because we hire coaches for everything else:
-
Business
-
Finance
-
Real estate
-
Fitness
-
Leadership
-
Therapy
-
Skill development
But somehow the thing that determines your QUALITY and LENGTH of life…
…you think you can “wing it”?
That’s the real insanity.
If you’re done with temporary challenges and ready for real, sustainable, medically supervised transformation, then it’s time for the next step.
